Rock formation type & Recommended PDC bit type
Soft rock formations (such as mudstone, shale, clay)—–Conventional planar tooth PDC bit with fewer blades
Medium-soft rock formations (such as sandstone, siltstone)—-Medium-aggressive planar tooth or conical tooth PDC bit, with three or four blades
Some medium-hard and uniform rock formations (such as some limestone)–Reinforced conical tooth PDC bit, with four or more blades
Hard and abrasive rock formations (such as granite)–It is not recommended to use PDC bits. Instead, tricone bits can be selected
